Ghost signs (60): Bath butchers

I really like the lettering on this ghost sign in Bath city centre, which is actually a palimpsest. One advertisement read 'E Dillon & Son, Purveyors of Prime English Meat'. Underneath, the earlier version isn't very clear but included 'family butchers'.

Nice one. There are several good ghost signs in Bath, I seem to remember. I must try to look out for some on my next visit.

Yes, Aztec West has a lovely set on flickr. I was only there very briefly though, so this was the only one I spotted.

Caroline

do you know when those signs were written? I would love to know when businesses started advertising on the solid architecture, not inside the shop windows.

Bath ghostsigns look almost too nice, as if there were sign-writing police around back in the day making sure that nothing gaudy disturbed the aesthetic.
See here, which to my typographer's eye has a flipped Y in Library: http://www.flickr.com/photos/janepbr/5634488661/in/photostream/

I know what you mean - they really are the most tasteful selection. Those links are lovely, and I'd agree about the flipped Y!
