This rather nice sign tops the market hall in Dol de Bretagne, Brittany - but what are the supporting animals? My best guess is greyhounds with rabbit ears...
Given the lack of obvious connection between the town and the 'heraldry', perhaps this came off-the-peg from one of those nineteenth-century catalogues?

A talbot, perhaps? William the Bastard brought them over with him, and Normandy and Brittany were linked by marriage later.

I think they are greyhounds wearing rather fetching caps. Not flat ones though, that would make them whippets!

I almost agree with the Dame but I would describe them as berets.
Of course - what else would a French greyhound wear!
