Who is it?

I've just added another cup to my lithophane collection. There's a problem, though: I don't know whom it depicts. The front of the cup has a monogram of JW and the dates 1870-1911, but I'm afraid that hasn't helped me much.

Does anyone have any idea who this might be?

How intriguing. That's rather a pleasant face depicted, too. You might (if you haven't already - forgive me, if impertinently teaching grandmothers etc.) try: www.lithophane.org.uk (there's an email address there). Otherwise ... well, good luck: hope you find out, & report back to us!

I looked at that site; she has the same cup with the same question!

Oh, Lord! Sorry about that. But what a coincidence. Hasn't she had any answers?

No need to apologise; it's comforting in a way to know I'm not the only person who can't identify him!

Looking at the dates could it be James Carling the artist - just a thought

Well, he looks a lot older than 41, so I guess that's not his life span!

SD, that's what happens every time I have an idea!

I'm sure you're right about the age, even allowing for the aging effect of all that facial hair. I have checked wikipedia obituaries just in case he died in 1911, but no luck.
