DEPTFORD - LONDON - BRITTANY - RANDOM BITS OF HISTORY
Whoops. That's one sign writer that should be shot
Legend has it he took a, er, refreshing break halfway through signwriting!
Well, I've seen 'Marlboro' or 'Marlborough' spelled that way before. The English always throw extraneous vowels into words. It's a cultural hobby.I had a dog, named after a local pub. His name was pronounced 'Chumley' however was spelled 'Cholmondesley'.But, he was a 90kg English Mastiff, he could carry that name. :)
Ah yes, it took me a long time to realise that Featherstonehaugh is pronounced 'Fanshaw', too! Apparently this one really was a mistake, though.
Kitty, we might use a few extra vowels, but look again, we don't usually use this many!!
But Anonymous, you do if you stutter! :DI love the idea it was a mistake by a drunken sign-writer, originally. Especially as they've kept it up there misspelled. I've been there, it's in Chester, near where I used to live... that's why I've seen it spelled that way before... d'uh...
