I like George Frederic Watts, both for his own work and for his connections with William Morris, Dante Gabriel Rossetti etc. But the plaque is unexpected. What might Watt's motive have been?
He seems to have seen the memorial as a complement to his series of portraits of 'great men': an instructive example for those who saw them. The memorial, of course, commemorated not the famous and influential but 'everyday heroes'.
